Dress your age

Dress your age…

You shouldn’t wear this anymore, it’s too…. Feel free to fill in here with whatever you were told, at least once in your life… I heard it also, so I know what I am talking about.

I don’t really remember how I dressed when I was 20… but I know I was kind of broke, so I probably wear quite cheap stuff, bought in obscure, discounted shops, whatever I could afford… Then, at some point, I got a job and and  I changed a bit my “style” and dressed all black or gray or brown…Really cool to see a young girl wearing such bright colors. 🙂 Around 30, I kind of started to have my own style, a sexy business and now, at 40, I turned to sporty casual.

We all go through style changes, but what should we pay attention to? Moreover, do we need to make compromises between how we feel and what we want and what we are asked to?

So, I started to google on how I should dress at 40 and what rules I should be following. Then I decided that, most of them, are not ok for me so I decided to pass. Let me share them with you.

Ripped and shredded denim should be left behind.

Oookkkk, not! Definitively not, many boyfriend jeans I have are more or less ripped or shredded and I still wear because there are comfortable and I can wear it in any combination I want, more casual or more stylish. Ripped boyfriend jeans are significant part of my wardrobe and I don’t plan to give it up anytime soon.

Say goodbye to Daisy Dukes.

Okk… I do have a lot of these also and I don’t wear them usually, most of the times at seaside or at a concerts (when these were possible :() . I don’t make a habit in wear short skirts or trousers because I simply don’t feel super comfortable in it anymore, but I do still keep them in the wardrobe.

No more platform sandals or flip flops.

Say what?  Platform are the coolest, especially if I choose a more stylish model that I can wear with dress, jeans or whatever I want. I have several pairs at home, not very tall, not very chunky style, and I wear them with pride and pleasure to jeans, dresses or other outfits I think it fits.

Avoid Buying Fabrics That Look Cheap (Or Are Cheap And Poorly Made)

Define that… I still have and buy cheaper clothes, I was never a fan of brands, but I did invested in some accessories like bags or sunglasses. I never considered to pay more than 50 euros on a regular dress (with some exceptions), and I believe it would be quite a loss of money if I would invest more and wear it for just one- two season.

Don’t wear tight clothes anymore.

Ok, that’s one rule I have some issues with. Indeed, it feels I don’t feel quite comfortable anymore to wear some skinny jeans unless I match it with a loose t-shirt. Or a tighter skirt that I match it with an oversized shirt. Crayon dresses I still keep in my wardrobe, but mostly to admire. I don’t wear them anymore not because it would not be appropriate, but because my current life phase doesn’t really require formal outfits and because, in this phase of my life, I prefer comfort over sexiness. 🙂

 Use Shapewear

Haha, that’s a good one. Since I tried to keep my body and mind well, the shapewear is not (yet) needed. Even so, I am thinking if I would ever wear such stuff… Better take care of what I eat and do sport, and keep in mind that, at some point, the shapewear goes off and then you need to face reality. ))

I believe I am mature and confident enough to set my own rules, so this is what I follow:

Wear What Feels Right To You!

I tried, at some point, buying occasionally fashion magazines and follow the trends… and, up to some point, I felt I was a bit into fashion and trends, but this didn’t last it for long time. That implied usually buying to many clothes, almost every season, and I really like the clothes I buy and keep them for years.. I realized I prefer buying what I like, what I feel comfortable in, design my own style (as bad as it might seem for more professional eyes) and have my own fashion signature. 🙂 What’s the point in dressing in trends but you don’t feel comfortable in it? Attitude does it all.

Continue To Take Risks

For some, my outfit combinations might seem I lack style, exactly because I sometimes matched strange pieces of outfit I liked and I felt good in it. These last 10 years, I really realized that I like make more courageous steps into personal style. I’ve met girls who matched perfectly articles that were not expensive, but looked incredible together. I’m not there, definitively, but I feel good with my choices and what I wear, so that’s the most important.

Own Your Sense Of Self and don’t Be Afraid To Evolve

I put these two together because, for me, these two are really connected. My style, which I built in years, may not be the perfect one, may not be in trends, but it’s mine, I own it with consciousness and I am not afraid to make changes and try new stuff. My clothes should represent me and I am changing, along the years. My style should also be allowed to grow and change, don’t you think so? 🙂

My suggestion: dress to express your feminity, your confidence, your true self, not to meet your “age requirements”.

Deal? 🙂
